How To 'Flight Check' Your Art Files:

USE this handy checklist for gathering art specs, recommended by Production Supervisor Steve Millane and Customer Service Representatives Michele Runyon, Eric Haak & Carol Mehelich.

Before you send an Art & Cliché Order Form, be sure to:

1.
Attach a proof print.
All computer generated art should be accompanied by a printout of the art, with the program type and version stated. (The print may be faxed. It is just to let us know if what we are seeing in the file is correct.) ITW Trans Tech uses both Macintosh and Windows platforms. Preferred programs are Macromedia Freehand and Adobe Illustrator.
2.
Tell us what program.
Here are the preferred compatible programs (name followed by format suffix):
• FreeHand (.fh, .pdf)
• Illustrator (.ai, .eps, .pdf)
• Photoshop (.psd, .eps, .tif, .jpg)
• AutoCad 2002 (.dwg, .dxf)

Note: AutoCad files are not considered final camera ready art, but can be used to help in creating art.

3.
Send us your fonts, etc.
Fonts used should be provided on diskette or sent by modem (FTP) in suitcase form, or type should be converted to outlines. Fonts may be provided for either Macintosh or Windows files. If not, ITW Trans Tech may substitute a similar font that may differ in appearance from the font image on your computer monitor.

• If providing scanned images, save as TIFF files.
• Provide all linked graphics.
• If EPS files are used and placed into a document, we will not be able to edit or manipulate graphics.

4.
Send What Medium?
We can read files sent on these media:
• 3.5” Diskette
(Mac or PC format)
• Iomega Zip Disk 100mb
• Compact Disc (CD)
• E-Mail Attachment
(All E-mail must be accompanied by company name, contact and phone number.

Can you make artwork from my rough sketch?
We can be very creative. Our experienced computer artists are capable of creating (or recreating) artwork from almost any medium, such as mylar, film, drawings, photos, or whatever.

We are equipped with a complete graphics studio as well as the latest digital computer workstations and imaging programs. Final films are output to a Herkules Elite imagesetter at a standard resolution of 2540 dots per inch (dpi) and a line screen of 120 lines per inch (lpi) unless specified otherwise.

If changes were made to your supplied art, we do recommend that you request a fax or film for final approval. For further art and cliché information, contact your Customer Service Associate.

'Put Your Art & Cliché Order On the Fast Track:
The Art of Filling In the Blanks

LACK of information can paralyze even the best customer service.
Without the picture on the top of the puzzle box, the individual pieces can’t be assembled properly. It is much the same with your artwork and cliché order. If key elements are omitted from the form, the process stalls, wasting valuable production time. So here is a quick reference guide for filling out your order form to guarantee speedy service.

Plate Services Associate Michele Runyon verifies an artwork order before entering it into the system.
1.
‘Bill To’ & ‘Ship To’ Not Always The Same?
BILL TO / SHIP TO: Let’s begin with the obvious– that may not be obvious to some. Where does it go to and who pays for it? For some of our customers, this is never an issue because the two addresses are always the same. But for others there are multiple locations. Specific bill/ship addresses will save you an extra phone call and avoid duplicate invoicing.

2.
Nothing Happens Without Your P.O. Number
PURCHASE ORDER NUMBER: Of all the data on this sheet, this one little number has the power to freeze the order in its tracks– or fast-track it to a timely completion. We cannot proceed without you issuing a Purchase Order Number (PO) for us to reference on our records and invoices. We use your PO to cross reference the job as well as to indicate, with multiple projects, which job got which charge. It keeps our records straight and helps your receiving and accounting departments keep track of who ordered what and from whom. Also, if this amount was based on an ITW Trans Tech quote, please reference that here.

3.
What Machine, What Material & How Many?
PRODUCT INFORMATION: This section asks for you to spell out your needs in detail. Many of these are machine-specific. If you are replacing an existing cliché plate or artwork film with a similar one, those details must be noted here. Most of our orders are repeat customers who need new plates for a different application on the same pad printing machine. So some of the specs from the old plate may be similar or even the same. However, if something has changed, please let us know. (See “Additional Comments” section.)

4.
How We Receive The Art & How We Change It
ARTWORK INFORMATION: The nuts-and-bolts of sending artwork and producing the final product gets a little tricky but that’s what our art experts do best. When in doubt, ask us first. Usually someone else has had a similar application. For more detailed information about electronic artwork files, see the sidebar at left “How To Flight Check Your Art Files”. Of course, any new project that requires distortion and test printing will also require sample parts. slight modifications of the basic design concept are answers to critical customer specifications.

5.
Don’t Forget The Sketch!
LAST BUT NOT LEAST: is the all-important sketch. In this case, your picture is worth a thousand words over the phone or in an e-mail. In the sketch you should indicate the orientation of the artwork image in relation to the cliché border. Dimensions are also critical to show the cliché position, any offsets, what angle to set the final art, and whether a screen should be used, and if so, on which portion of the image.
